Sccc president promotes change at inauguration – new jersey herald – quotes about good deeds

NEWTON — Sussex County Community College President Jon Connolly, just over a year into the job, was lauded by dignitaries and peers at Connolly’s presidential inauguration ceremony Friday for initiating bold new changes over the past year — even as he all but promised more changes to come.

While disavowing change for change’s sake, Connolly suggested the college needed to continue investing in practical programs to meet the needs of adult learners while also maintaining its traditional focus as a two-year institution for degree-seeking students.

“A community college education on the way to a four-year education saves our students money and, to be honest, a lot of money,” said Connolly, who touted the economic benefits of a standalone associate degree as well as the benefits of a bachelor’s degree.

“We have a long robust tradition

of providing a timeless education,” he added, “but SCCC so far has simply not done enough for career and technical education. Having a good day quotes We have not fully embraced the needs of adult learners, and we need to do better. Positive quotes to start your day There are people who need practical ‘now’ skills earned in two years or even less so they can be employable for themselves right away.”

The college, he noted, has already begun taking steps in this direction: A new cosmetology program has just been introduced, and a food and beverage program is on the way.

SCCC Board of Trustees President Lorraine Parker said Friday that under Connolly’s leadership, eight new programs — some of them in technical areas applicable to manufacturing — had been introduced over the past year along with two new satellite locations in Vernon and Hopatcong.

“Dr. Funny good morning quotes tumblr Connolly is not just a strategic planner. Quotes for having a good day He is a strategic doer, and we are proud to inaugurate him today as our sixth president,” Parker said.

Friday’s inauguration ceremony took place against the backdrop of what has been a busy first year for Connolly, during which there have also been several layoffs as part of an ongoing restructuring at the college.

But the celebratory mood of Friday’s event, which was held at SCCC’s Performing Arts Center and attended by nearly 150 people, suggested the overall thrust of Connolly’s initiatives has begun bearing fruit and succeeded in obtaining the buy-in of key stakeholders.

Among them was Andrew Godlewsky, a SCCC student and president of its business club, who recounted his own path from starting out as a run-of-the-mill student uninvolved in the life of the college to later embracing its extracurricular offerings. Inspirational quotes to start your day off Godlewsky suggested Connolly, by his own involvement in campus activities, had been a role model for him and others and credited Connolly with making students a priority.

“Dr. Inspirational quotes for someone having a bad day Connolly can be found in the tutoring center helping students with their homework,” Godlewsky said. Inspirational quotes for a new day “Dr. Day quotes for her Connolly can often be found attending events. Bible verses to have a good day He will walk in, sit down and participate. Positive quotes to start a day He will take the time to get to know you and talk to you and appreciate you.”

Shelby Chapman, president of the SCCC Student Government Association, later told Connolly that the association intended to dedicate a tree on campus in his name as a token of appreciation and goodwill and as an expression of the county’s motto, “People and Nature Together.”

In his own speech afterward, Connolly — a Ph.D. Inspirational quotes to start your day biologist with a background in forestry science — invoked the metaphor of a tree as he spoke of the student growth vital for success in school and in life. Quotes to wish someone a good day He also cited the metaphor when discussing the college’s own mission and future as part of what he called “the ecosystem” of Sussex County.

“A tree, to grow, must take a chance on life and face the elements rather than hide from them in the protective casing of a seed,” Connolly said.

He added that a tree, while remaining rooted in the soil, “must take the risk, emerge as a seedling, and grow toward the light and find the resources it needs to capture its place in the world. Inspirational quotes to start the day The life of a tree is really difficult, and it must constantly adapt to new conditions.”

Sussex County Freeholder Director George Graham noted Friday, with Connolly looking on, that one of the conditions now facing the college is the ongoing population decline in the county. Bible verses for a good day at work Graham said that for county officials and others charged with plotting the school’s future, the need for it to remain viable in the face of this decline remains a significant ongoing challenge.

“We are proud of this institution and believe in this institution, but times have changed and it’s not something we can distance ourselves from,” said Graham, who praised Connolly for his enthusiasm and willingness to take on these and other challenges.

Laurence Nespoli, president of the New Jersey Council of County Colleges, said Friday that notwithstanding these challenges, the community college movement launched following the Second World War has been “one of America’s greatest success stories.”

His comments were echoed by John Wefing, a Seton Hall law professor and member of the Governor’s Council on Higher Education, who served as the keynote speaker at Friday’s ceremony.

Recently, Wefing said, the governor’s council set a goal of “65 by 25” — meaning “65 percent of the adult population in New Jersey by the year 2025 should have some form of a degree, whether from a county college or other college or university, or some advanced certificate.”

Wefing called SCCC, which he said had graduated more than 7,580 students since its founding in 1981, “a central link in meeting the need for an educated workforce” and in making education financially attainable for many, if not all, people.

Other dignitaries at Friday’s ceremony included state Sen. Inspirational quotes about having a great day Steve Oroho, Assemblywoman Gail Phoebus, and SCCC Foundation Chair and former Newton Mayor Helen LeFrois.

Also included in the roster of well-wishers was a former colleague of Connolly who made the trip to New Jersey from Maine, where they first met more than 10 years ago while serving together on the faculty of Husson University in Maine.

“Losing him as a vice president in the Maine Community College System was a loss for us, but our loss is your great gain,” said Cornel Plebani, now chairman of the criminal justice department at Eastern Maine Community College.

Plebani, in his comments, credited Connolly with teaching him the virtue of patience in the classroom and other important lessons and urged Connolly never to forget “your roots as a teacher.”

Connolly, a New Jersey native who was born and raised in Somerset County, began his career teaching seventh and eighth grade science and later taught at the college level for almost 10 years.

Before being hired as SCCC president in September 2015, he served two years as vice president of academic affairs at Kennebec Valley Community College in Maine. Have a great day quotes for facebook Prior to that, he served four years as a college vice president in the Northern Wyoming Community College District but otherwise spent most of his academic and professional career in Maine.

Connolly, who holds a doctorate in biology from the University of Maine, also has a master’s degree in forestry science from Yale University and a bachelor’s degree in biology and geology from Colby College in Maine.

Gregg Edwards, deputy secretary for higher education in New Jersey, joked Friday that with Connolly’s background in forestry and his time spent in the mostly rural states of Maine and Wyoming, it seemed fitting for him now to be working in “the wilds of New Jersey” in Sussex County.

Francesco Ancona, professor of English at SCCC, served as the faculty speaker Friday and, on behalf of his colleagues, offered his best wishes by sprinkling a bit of humor with a quote from essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson.

“I have to admit that however vehemently we faculty may oppose plagiarism, it really does save a lot of time,” joked Ancona, who went on to recount Emerson’s reaction upon receiving a copy of Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass.”

“Even though pretty much everyone else rejected Whitman’s work or even threw it in the fireplace, Emerson kindly expressed the hope that he was greeting Whitman at the beginning of a great career,” Ancona said. Inspirational quotes for a great day “May this inaugural greeting prove to be the same.”

James Baker, SCCC’s interim vice president for academic affairs, served as master of ceremonies Friday. Inspirational quotes for the workplace He also performed the piano accompaniment to the national anthem, which was sung by SCCC student Haley Vick.

Baker — along with Curtis Biggs, SCCC’s interim dean of student services — later presented Connolly with the ceremonial mace and medallion.

Connolly, upon concluding his remarks Friday, said SCCC’s mission is about “building human capital” and said the college must remain true to its mission.
